ADDINOL ECONOMIC 016

0W16 Meaning

SAE 0W-16 engine oils are subject to a relatively new classification for modern gasoline engines. They are multi-grade oils with excellent flow properties at low temperatures. The 0W designation means the oil remains fluid down to -40°C. Good cold-start performance is ensured down to these low temperatures, minimizing engine wear. The second part of the SAE classification, the number "16," indicates the kinematic viscosity at 100°C. The viscosity of all 0W-16 oils ranges from 6.1 to 8.2 mm²/s. Simultaneously, the minimum HTHS viscosity is 2.3 mm²/s.

Before the introduction of 0W-16 engine oils, all SAE viscosity grades were distinguishable by fixed intervals of their permissible kinematic viscosity. The 0W-16 grade now overlaps with the 0W-20 grade (kinematic viscosity of 6.9–9.3 mm²/s). The only way to differentiate between the two grades is by their HTHS viscosity. Compared to 0W-20, 0W-16 engine oil, due to its lower viscosity, offers even better performance in terms of fuel economy, CO₂ reduction, and wear protection.

Which models can use 0W16 engine oil?

The new SAE grade was developed to promote environmentally friendly vehicles. Its low emissions and reduced fuel consumption are particularly beneficial in polluted urban areas. Therefore, SAE 0W-16 engine oil is mandatory for modern engines from many Asian (Japanese) manufacturers. This oil is also recommended for some hybrid models.

The following manufacturers have already developed engines that require 0W16 oil:

  • Toyota
  • Lexus
  • Honda
  • Nissan
  • Mitsubishi
  • Subaru
  • Suzuki

The low-viscosity oil also helps against LSPI.
